Big relief for University of Delhi on the cards?

Delhi Government is preparing a big package for Delhi University to rein in the ₹462 crore deficit and channel fresh funds into research and infrastructure, signalling a shift from fee-dependent operations to stabilised public financing. Recent releases to state-funded DU colleges indicate a renewed funding pipeline that could ease cash flow pressures and support timely salaries and campus upkeep .

The move follows projections showing DU’s widening gap between salary/recurring expenditures and grants, which has increased reliance on internal receipts and fee hikes; the package aims to plug these structural shortfalls while sustaining academic services and lab capacity critical for research output .

With capital needs rising and some prior grant heads tightening, targeted allocations are expected to accelerate maintenance and upgrades without overburdening students .

Early signals include ₹417 crore released to 12 DU colleges after years of uncertainty, aligning with a broader stabilisation approach in the city’s budget posture and previewing how the larger DU package may roll out for research and infrastructure acceleration
